Butrus Family’s Decades of Suffering

Butrus has had responsibility for his family since his father was killed in 1970.

Butrus Family - Decades of Suffering

Butrus refused to participate in the first Gulf War. Butrus was arrested, and Baath party thugs destroyed the family house. When they entered, they beat Butrus’s brother with a gun. Since then, he has had psychological problems.

They sought to escape to Turkey but they could not afford to.

Then they visited the Red Cross to ask for help but received nothing.

Since they came to Jordan in 1992, they have accepted any kind of work in order to survive. It was not easy. During this time, they had applied for immigration to Australia and Canada, but they did not receive visas.

When they came to Jordan, they were young. Now they are old. The sons have lost the opportunity to marry, and their mother is now 75 years old.

They’ve lost so many years of their lives. They worry about their mother.

Ayman Fadel’s note: As mentioned in the blog introduction, for security reasons I blur the faces and change names to conceal identity. The facial expressions in the original pictures convey a different kind of sadness and resignation then many of the photos I’ve so far received.
